Green Lodging Program Continues to Show Strength in White Mountains
Concord, New Hampshire – The New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association’s (NHLRA) Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program is pleased to announce that The White Mountain Hotel and Resort in North Conway has joined the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging Program as an Environmental Partner. The White Mountain Hotel joins twenty-three other lodging facilities in the White Mountains working continually to lessen their impact on the environment.
Michelle Veasey, Program Manager for the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program commented “The number of lodging properties participating in the program in the White Mountains shows that businesses here are serious about making a difference to protect our environment. Nancy Irving with the White Mountain Hotel has shown interest in joining the program for awhile. We’re pleased with the things they have done and look forward to working with them.”
The New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging Program asks that applicants commit to environmental actions in five focus areas; energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, hazardous waste reduction and education.
The White Mountain Hotel and Resort has reduced their energy use by installing occupancy sensors in many areas, LED lit exit signs throughout, energy efficient lighting in their exterior areas and following an energy efficiency maintenance plan. Water conservation, which in many cases also reduces energy use, is achieved through the implementation of a voluntary towel and linen reuse program, low-flow toilets and a watering plan that is limited to the early morning hours. Waste reduction has also been achieved through the use of glasses and coffee mugs in guestrooms, cloth napkins with dining, double-sided printing, refurbishing or donation of old furniture and reusing old linens as cleaning rags. The have also worked to reduce hazardous waste by lessening their use of hazardous chemicals and cleaning products.
“The impact our members have in reducing environmental stresses on the state is tremendous. It’s great to see these members rewarded for their efforts with increased interest from their guests and future travelers. The program website has seen increased activity with visitors regularly going to the “Find Lodging” and Find Restaurant pages.” Veasey said.
The Sustainable Lodging Program is open and free to any New Hampshire lodging property interested in preserving and protecting our state by lessening the impact of their operations on the environment. Facilities find that being “green” also adds green to their bottom line. For more information, contact Michelle Veasey at 228-9585 or go to the program’s website at www.nhslp.org.
