Hotel lodging New Hampshire has been sought by tourists since the early nineteenth century when
in the 1820s New Hampshire's White Mountains became one of the most popular tourist destinations
in North America. With the introduction of rail service to the area in 1850 visitors arrived in
large numbers from all over New England, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore as well as from
Canada and Europe. In order to accommodate the ever-increasing number of summer lodging visitors to
the White Mountains the grand hotels were built. A North Conway Grand Resort Hotel was defined as a hotel
large enough to accommodate at least 200 guests. At the height of their popularity between
1885 and 1920, more than 20 grand hotels could provide lodging accommodations for 6500 guests
simultaneously. Eventually most of these New Hampshire hotels burned or were demolished or stand empty. There
are only a few surviving grand lodging hotels such as the Mount Washington Hotel and the Balsams.
In recent decades hotels have been built in the grand tradition to resemble these historical
resorts. One of these situated at the base of the ledges in North Conway is the White Mountain
Hotel and Resort. This hotel lodging New Hampshire property is rated a three-diamond resort by
the American Automobile Association. Expect only the finest accommodations at this luxury resort
surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest. Relax at the lodging White Mountain Hotel and Resort
after a day enjoying lodging.
New Hampshire has also become a winter tourist lodging destination for nearly a century. The first
slalom race held in the United States was at Dartmouth in 1923 and in 1927, the first US
downhill race was run at Mt. Moosilauke in Warren, Sugar Hill lodging was the home of the first
resort lodging based ski school in the United States in 1929. During this same period steam powered
ski trains brought skiers from Boston and New York to North Conway New Hampshire. In the 1930s,
New Hampshire lodging folks used their Yankee ingenuity to figure out better and faster ways to lift
skiers up the mountains via Whitney's shovel-handle tow at Black Mountain, Gunstock's
longest-in-the-world lodging rope tow, Cannon Mountain's tramway, and Cranmore's skimobile.
